| Wexford’s quiet Irish charm hides its violent history and belies its geographical prominence, with it being the first port of call for Vikings, Normans, and anyone else wishing to take advantage of its sunny beaches. Having survived the Norman conquerors, the ravages of Oliver Cromwell in 1649 when he slaughtered 300 people in the Bull Ring, and the bloody 1798 revolution, it continues business as usual, and offers all the advantages of city life and some wonderful historical buildings to explore. |

Westgate Tower - The only existing tower of the original six built into the Norman city wall, inside is a barred cell that once held luckless prisoners.
Selskar Abbey – Climb the dark scary stairwell where once King Henry II paid penance for the murder of Thomas à Becket.
Bull Ring – In 1621, the town’s butcher guild introduced bullfights, with the hide going to the mayor and the meat to the poor folk.
Franciscan Friary – The church inside the lofty Friary houses the gruesome effigy of the ‘Little Saint’ who died at the hands of his Roman father.
Irish National Heritage Park – Displayed in the park are full size replicas of buildings, and objects, including a Viking ship, from nine thousand years of Irish history. |
